Because 4 turtles on the back on an elephant would just be WRONG. lol A favorite quote is that "there was a myth before the myth began, venerable , articulate and complete." Which to me suggests to me anyway, that the myth is based on something perhaps more true than how the human creation of a myth to express it is corrupted by our poor vision. Something like that!
